Multiple Sclerosis Travel Insurance

It is estimated that over two million people around the world have Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It’s a neurological condition that affects the brain and/or spinal cord which can cause a range of symptoms including difficulty walking, blurred vision as well as muscle stiffness and spasms. If you have MS, then you might have encountered problems obtaining travel insurance.

At Premier Cover we specialise in providing travel insurance to those with pre-existing medical conditions, so if you have MS and are fit to travel then your condition shouldn’t affect your ability to get cover from us.

I Have MS. Can I Still Get Travel Insurance?

Here at Premier Cover we understand that questions about whether you can get covered and what the policy will cost can be a concern. Also maybe the thought of answering a long list of questions about your condition is off putting.

However, with Premier Cover there's no need to worry as we've made obtaining travel insurance for those with Multiple Sclerosis as straightforward as possible.

Our quick and easy medical screening process is available online or if you prefer you can speak to one of our highly-trained and friendly agents for free. Either way you’ll be asked some questions regarding your condition and we will then use your answers to make a quick decision, meaning you can be covered within minutes!

What Is A Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or underlying condition that you are aware of prior to taking out your travel insurance policy.

Although emergency medical treatment is covered by our policies, we can’t cover conditions that you neglect to inform us about, and this could result in your claim being declined. As such it’s best to declare all conditions at the time of purchase and in many cases there may be no additional premium to pay. If you are unsure about anything, please give our friendly team a call on 0800 298 1112 and they will answer any questions you may have and can guide you through the process too.

Do I Need An EHIC If I Have Multiple Sclerosis?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles UK residents access to necessary, state provided medical treatment, during a temporary visit in the European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland - at a reduced cost or free of charge. The EHIC is valid for five years.

As a valued Premier Cover policyholder, you will have no excess to pay when the EHIC is used.

Please remember to take your EHIC with you when you travel and check that it is still valid, as you’ll be required to present it when seeking medical treatment. Each traveller will require a card. The EHIC will cover the costs of managing pre-existing medical conditions, maternity care or renal dialysis but it will not cover you if you are going abroad to receive medical treatment. And because it doesn’t cover aspects such as repatriation, it’s not a replacement for having a good travel insurance policy.

Travel Tips For Those With MS

  • It’s good practice to keep all your medication in their original containers, along with a letter from your doctor explaining that you have MS. With medication, you should also make sure that you have packed enough for the duration of your trip, as well as a little extra just in case you hit any unexpected delays along the way.

  • Some countries have very strict rules in regards to medication so it’s best to check before you travel to ensure there are no unexpected issues with what you are planning to take with you.

  • If you are travelling to somewhere that will require vaccinations, make sure you check with your doctor beforehand. As a general rule you should not have any vaccinations during an acute relapse or if you are undergoing steroid treatment.

  • Check that your accommodation is suitable for the nature of your condition. For example is there a lift or is it possible to have a ground floor room? It’s a good idea to contact them prior to arrival if you have any specific requirements and to see if there are any special arrangements that can be made.
