Crohn's Disease Travel Insurance

Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects around 115,000 people in the UK. There is currently no cure for Crohn’s disease, but with the right treatment it is a very manageable condition and one that shouldn’t restrict your ability to travel.

As for any traveller, it’s important that you take out a suitable travel insurance policy to cover you for the unexpected. For example, if you have to seek emergency medical treatment while you’re abroad as a result of your condition, and don’t have insurance, you could be left to pay your medical bills in their entirety.

I Have Crohn’s Disease. Can I Still Get Travel Insurance?

Here at Premier Cover we understand that questions about whether you can get covered and what the policy will cost can be a concern. Also maybe the thought of answering a long list of questions about your condition is off putting.

However, there's no need to worry as we've made obtaining travel insurance for those with Crohn’s Disease as straightforward as possible.

Our quick and easy medical screening process is available online or if you prefer you can speak to one of our highly-trained and friendly agents for free. Either way you’ll be asked some questions regarding your condition and we will then use your answers to make a quick decision, meaning you can be covered within minutes.

What Is A Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or underlying condition that you are aware of prior to taking out your travel insurance policy. Although emergency medical treatment is covered by our policies, we can’t cover conditions that you neglect to inform us about, and this could result in your claim being declined. As such it’s best to declare all conditions at the time of purchase and in many cases there may be no additional premium to pay. If you are unsure about anything, please give our friendly team a call on 0800 298 1112 and they will answer any questions you may have and guide you through the process too.

Do I Need An EHIC If I Have Crohn’s Disease?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles UK residents access to necessary, state provided medical treatment, during a temporary visit in the European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland - at a reduced cost or free of charge. The EHIC is valid for five years.

As a valued Premier Cover policyholder, you will have no excess to pay when the EHIC is used.

Please remember to take your EHIC with you when you travel and check that it is still valid, as you’ll be required to present it when seeking medical treatment. Each traveller will require a card. The EHIC will cover the costs of managing pre-existing medical conditions, maternity care or renal dialysis but it will not cover you if you are going abroad to receive medical treatment. And because it doesn’t cover aspects such as repatriation, it’s not a replacement for having a good travel insurance policy.

Travel Tips For Those With Crohn’s Disease

  • If you take medication to manage your condition, then make sure that you have taken enough to last the entire duration of your trip, plus a little extra just in case you hit any unexpected delays along the way.

  • If you are travelling to somewhere that requires vaccinations make sure that you check with your GP before travelling there. You may find that some vaccinations are unsuitable, or that some may exacerbate your condition.

  • If your treatment involves enteral nutrition (liquid diet), then you may find that a powdered product is much easier to transport in your luggage. This may require you to obtain a new prescription, so make sure that you do this well in advance of your travels.

  • If you find that certain types of food trigger your symptoms, then make sure to do some research before you travel as you may find that local dishes contain ingredients that are likely to impact your Crohn’s Disease.
