Cancer Travel Insurance

Living with cancer, whether you are receiving treatment or are in remission, is a worrying and stressful time. So being able to head away on holiday to enjoy a break from the norm is even more important.

If you’re planning on taking a trip, it’s crucial that you get a travel insurance policy tailored to your specific needs. If you need to seek medical treatment while you’re away, and neglect to take out a travel insurance policy, you could be left to pay the medical bills in their entirety (which can run into thousands).

I Have Cancer, Or I Am In Remission. Can I Still Get Travel Insurance?

Here at Premier Cover we understand that questions about whether you can get covered and what the policy will cost can be a concern. Also maybe the thought of answering a long list of questions about your condition is off putting.

However, with Premier Cover there’s no need to worry as we’ve made obtaining Travel Insurance for cancer as straightforward as possible.

Our quick and easy medical screening process is available online or if you prefer you can speak to one of our highly-trained and friendly agents for free. Either way you’ll be asked some questions regarding your condition and we will then use your answers to make a quick decision, meaning you’ll be covered within minutes!

What Is A Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or underlying condition that you are aware of prior to taking out your travel insurance policy. Although emergency medical treatment is covered by our policies, we can’t cover conditions that you neglect to inform us about, and this could result in your claim being rejected. As such it’s best to declare all conditions at the time of purchase and in many cases there may be no additional premium to pay. If you are unsure about anything, please give our friendly team a call on 0800 298 1112 and they will answer any questions you may have and guide you through the process too.

Do I Need An EHIC If I Have Cancer?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles UK residents access to necessary, state provided medical treatment, during a temporary visit in the European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland - at a reduced cost or free of charge. The EHIC is valid for five years.

As a valued Premier Cover policyholder, you will have no excess to pay when the EHIC is used.

Please remember to take your EHIC with you when you travel and check that it is still valid, as you are required to present it for medical treatment. Each traveller will require a card. The EHIC will cover the costs of managing pre-existing medical conditions, maternity care or renal dialysis but it will not cover you if you are going abroad to receive medical treatment.

Travel Tips For Cancer Patients

  • The first thing to do before you travel is to consult with your GP. If you have recently received chemotherapy your body will naturally be at a higher risk of infection and doctors would normally advise against travel.
  • Due to changes in air pressure and oxygen levels, there are restrictions on flying with cancer, as this can lead to further complications. For the same reason it’s advised that you don’t travel for at least 10 days after you have undergone any surgeries.
  • Make sure that you have packed enough medication for the duration of your trip, plus extra as you should account for any unexpected delays that you hit along the way.
  • Make sure that you keep any and all medications in their original packaging, as opposed to unmarked containers, and make sure to check local laws regarding your medications, as they can differ from one place to another.
