Atrial Fibrillation Travel Insurance

Atrial fibrillation is a condition that causes an irregular heartbeat, and often presents itself as abnormally fast. With atrial fibrillation you can often find that your increased heart rate causes symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath and tiredness.

If you suffer from atrial fibrillation and are looking to travel, you need to make sure that you have taken out a suitable travel insurance policy. That’s because if you need to seek emergency medical treatment while you’re abroad, and don’t have travel insurance in place, you could be left to pay your medical bills in their entirety leaving you hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds out of pocket.

I Have Atrial Fibrillation. Can I Still Get Travel Insurance?

Here at Premier Cover we understand that questions about whether you can get covered and what the policy will cost can be a concern. Also maybe the thought of answering a long list of questions about your condition is off putting.

With Premier Cover however there's no need to worry as we've made obtaining travel insurance for those with atrial fibrillation as straightforward as possible.

Our quick and easy medical screening process is available online or if you prefer you can speak to one of our highly-trained and friendly agents for free. Either way you’ll be asked some questions regarding your condition and we will then use your answers to make a quick decision, meaning you can be covered within minutes!

What Is A Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is any illness or underlying condition that you are aware of prior to taking out your travel insurance policy. Although emergency medical treatment is covered by our policies, we can’t cover conditions that you neglect to inform us about, and this could result in your claim being rejected. As such it’s best to declare all conditions at the time of purchase and in many cases there may be no additional premium to pay. If you are unsure about anything, please give our friendly team a call on 0800 298 1112 and they will answer any questions you may have and guide you through the process too.

Do I Need An EHIC If I Have Atrial Fibrillation?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles UK residents access to necessary, state provided medical treatment, during a temporary visit in the European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland - at a reduced cost or free of charge. The EHIC is valid for five years.

As a valued Premier Cover policyholder, you will have no excess to pay when the EHIC is used.

Please remember to take your EHIC with you when you travel and check that it is still valid, as you’ll be required to present it when seeking medical treatment. Each traveller will require a card. The EHIC will cover the costs of managing pre-existing medical conditions, maternity care or renal dialysis but it will not cover you if you are going abroad to receive medical treatment. And because it doesn’t cover aspects such as repatriation, it’s not a replacement for having a good travel insurance policy.

Travel Tips For Those With Atrial Fibrillation

  • Make sure that you have taken enough medication to last the entire duration of your trip, plus a little extra just in case you hit any unexpected delays along the way.

  • Make sure that you have taken, and are wearing your medical alert bracelet, this should include: your condition, your emergency contact details, any implanted devices and the medications you take.

  • If you have a pacemaker make sure that you inform airport security staff, they can make alternative arrangements so that you don’t have to go through a metal detector.

  • Dehydration, alcohol and caffeine are common triggers for atrial fibrillation, so try not to overindulge while you’re away.
